On April 26, 2017, Life Care Center of Hickory Woods in Antioch, Tennessee, hosted a special party for a resident.

Erna Beyer had not been feeling well or eating very much, so the nursing and activity associates decided to cheer her up. She is originally from Germany, between the villages of Cuxhaven and Bremerhaven, so the associates surprised her with a “lunch in Germany” party. Several associates at the facility have a German heritage and made an assortment of German foods that included sauerkraut with pork, potatoes with cabbage and sausage, potato salad and apple tort.

“Because of my heritage, it was a great joy to my heart to see her sing along and enjoy what we cooked for her,” said Lori Brown, director of nursing.

The honored guest, residents and associates met in the dining room and enjoyed food and music as the entertainer played an accordion and sang to Beyer. She smiled, sang and moved her hands and head along to the music.

When asked about the party, Beyer replied in German, “Wunderbar!”

“It was very moving to see her have these tastes and sounds of Germany to bring back memories of her life there,” shared Debbie Guy, activity director.
